A Dutch multinational is a leading supplier of nano- and micro-particles designed to enhance their clients’ product or process performance in a wide range of consumer products and industrial applications.
The company is looking for new materials and/or technologies in the nano- and micrometer scale that can make these products more sustainable, durable, lightweight and/or functional.
Cooperation with partners would be in the frame of a research or a technical cooperation agreement.


FULL DESCRIPTION

The Dutch company is a globally leading supplier of nano- and micro-particles designed to enhance product or process performance in applications ranging from automotive parts and paints to wine corks and pharmaceuticals. In automotive for example the company’s microspheres help make products lighter, leading to better performance and lower emissions from transport. In coating industry other particles that include colloidal silica help make paints and coatings dirt-repellent. And another silica-based material is used to purify pharmaceuticals, to the health benefit of many.
The company’s small particle business is prospering and helping their customers achieve significant sustainability improvements, but the company thinks it can have an even bigger impact. They see a growing need in the market for materials that enable more efficient and advanced performance, as well as materials that contribute to sustainability.

The Dutch company is looking for new materials, technologies, functionalities, and/or hybrids that they do not have in their portfolio today: small particles that make a big impact by making customers’ products more sustainable, durable, lightweight, and/or functional. New solutions need to either meet a clear market demand or complement or improve their current technologies.

New particle technologies need to be in the nano- to micrometer scale and be safe and sustainable in use. Nano-particles with adverse health or safety aspects are out of consideration and excluded from this challenge.
· For nanoparticles, this means that they should be non-toxic and non-accumulative. The company is looking for more sustainable solutions such as water-based technologies and particles that are silica-based or bio-based.
· For their expandable microspheres, they are looking for new sustainable polymer technologies that complement their portfolio or make it more sustainable.

The company has a strong preference and will focus on ideas from startups which already have a proof of concept so that they can start producing on a pilot scale within 3 to 5 years. Small companies that have already commercialized a niche product and are looking for a partner to help them broaden their applications are especially welcome to join. Given that two of the company’s own brands began as internal startups, they have the experience and resources needed to help a startup bring cutting edge small particle technology to market. Joint future cooperation will take place in the frame of a research cooperation agreement or a technical cooperation agreement.

Legislation on energy usage is driving the company to reduce raw material usage while new demands on performance are continuously coming up. The Dutch company wants to expand its portfolio to be able to provide new functionalities that customers are searching for. They would like to build on silica as an inherently safe and non-accumulative nanoparticle technology platform, but if alternative technologies show a similar sustainability profile, the company is also interested in their performance features.
