ABSTRACT

A German research team at a life sciences incubator has developed a target-specific drug delivery system using engineered protein nanoparticle. They look for industrial partners, e.g. pharma which provide a lead candidate and the assays for a quantitative read out in the inhaled application form. Also an intravenous application is possible. The partner should provide test model for inhaled drug administration. A technical co-operation agreement is envisaged for further development.

A German research team at a life science incubator has developed a nanotechnological process to apply drugs in a target oriented way without any loss of ingredient and any side effects.
The German scientists look for lead candidates, also similar ones, and assays to be provided to them for quantitative read out, in order to test delivery to lung . In case of effective drug transport to the lung, the system can be developed to target different lung diseases like cystic fibrosis or non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC).

So far the project established a target specific drug delivery system using EPN (engineered protein nanoparticles) based on capsid proteins of the human polyomaviruses. The capsid proteins are biotechnologically produced in insect (Sf9), bacterial (E. coli) and yeast (P. pastoris) cells and purified with a therapeutic purity ensuring complete removal of viral DNA. EPN make use of the positive features of the polyomavirus derived particles and modify the natural tropism by inclusion of ligands which allow specific targeting of cellular structures. Therefore, EPN produced by the technology provides protected transport and delivery and cell specific targeting of different payloads.

A major advantage of this evolutionary adapted transport system is the opportunity to encapsulate the different payloads during an in vitro process.
Due to the natural infection pathway of polyomavirus the inhaled route is a planned project with high chances of success.
Initial preclinical data were generated by the EPN team during the project phase.

They look for industrial partners in the field of pharma for delivery of nearly any kind of drug, main focus are nucleic acid based drugs. The partner sought should provide test model for inhaled drug administration from formulation to in vitro testing of the delivery platform and generating preclinical data in ex vivo as well as in vivo investigations in the end.
He should provide lead candidate and assay for quantitative read out.

The cooperation form sought is technical cooperation agreement for further development, respectively for realization in future.

The German research team would provide the evidence / read out to detect the nanoparticles in tissue. They could also support with technical and scientific know-how.

- Type of partner sought: The partner should provide a lead candidate and the assays for a quantitative read out in the inhaled application form but the intravenous application is also possible.
Furthermore similar drug candidates should be provided in order to test delivery to the lung.
It should be applicable in aqueous solution.

Know-how / experience in the nanoparticale area is preferred.
- Specific area of activity of the partner: Any industrial partner, e.g. from pharma is sought who is looking for a transport system to deliver their lead drug candidate. Indication is not pre-selected as the transport system could be adapted to the diseased tissue.
