A Slovene company, active in the import, wholesale and distribution of food products, is looking for cooperation with research organizations and/ or companies with know-how in the fields of carbon capture and utilization to convert the captured carbon dioxide into more valuable substances or products in the food, beverages, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and fuel industries.
Research and technical cooperation agreements are sought.
A Slovenian company with three decades of experience as an innovative distributor of food products (with focus on frozen items) has up to 1700 pallet places in seven refrigeration and freezing chambers, in which all temperature regimes are possible. The company imports and distributes food products from Europe mostly in Slovene and Croatian markets.
The importer/ distributor is the member of the European Catering Distributors, Slovenian Business Club and holds the Platinum credit excellence. The company is upgrading and digitalizing its business processes and entire value chain towards resource and energy efficiency to reduce its carbon imprint. The company has developed an online mobile platform for optimizing business processes in the Hotel/Restaurant/Café (HoReCa) industry.
The company would like to contribute to social welfare, human health, and energy security perspectives to develop technologies that remove carbon dioxide from the air. Carbon capture and utilization (CCU) may offer a response to the global challenge of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Captured CO2 can be converted to several more valuable substances or products in the food, beverages, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and fuel industries while retaining the carbon neutrality of the production processes. For example, hydrocarbons such as methanol can be used as bio-fuels and other alternative and renewable sources of energy. Other commercial products include plastics, concrete and reactants for various chemical synthesis.
The company is highly interested in methods that use electricity, heat, or a combination thereof to convert carbon dioxide and water into small molecule alcohols, such as ethanol.
The company is interested in research and technical cooperation with experts in the areas of methods for producing alcohols by deriving carbon dioxide from the air or another dilute source, and supplying water, which is converted to hydrogen and oxygen, with subsequent conversion of the carbon dioxide and hydrogen into alcohols.
The company decided on two types of cooperation:
a) Research cooperation
The requested technology as a whole may not be available on the market via licensing agreement with the patent holder. Therefore, an alternative technology for converting the captured carbon dioxide into more valuable substances or products in the food, beverages, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and fuel industries, has to be developed at an earlier stage in cooperation with research organizations and/ or companies. A new technology available for demonstration would be the desired outcome of the cooperation. The company foresees the new technology being developed by a start-up legal entity and is ready to commit long-term to contributing part of the financial resources needed.
b) Technical cooperation
Parts of the requested technology may be separately and commercially available on the market. Under technical cooperation, an integrator with cross-cutting knowledge/ expertise, may combine several existing technologies for converting the captured carbon dioxide into more valuable substances or products in the food, beverages, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and fuel industries, into a prototype available for demonstration. The company foresees organizing the integration of existing technologies through a start-up legal entity and is ready to commit long-term to contributing part of the financial resources needed.
- Type of partner sought: A one-step or two-step process to produce alcohols with the reaction of carbon dioxide with hydrogen is sought.
In the one-step process, a reactor is used to conduct the multiple chemical reactions required to produce alcohols from carbon dioxide:
• air capture system for collection of carbon dioxide from the air;
• hydrogenation system that produces hydrogen from water using an electrolyser;
• hydrogenation system that combines production of carbon monoxide and hydrogen produced from the electrolyser with the carbon monoxide to produce a mixture of alcohols;
• distillation unit to purify the alcohol.
- Specific area of activity of the partner: a) Research cooperation
Research organizations and/ or companies with the knowledge and experiences in the carbon capture and utilization would develop novel technology for converting the captured carbon dioxide into more valuable substances or products in the food, beverages, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and fuel industries.
b) Technical cooperation
Companies, active as integrators with cross-cutting knowledge/ expertize, shall combine several existing technologies into a one or two-step process (reaction of carbon dioxide with hydrogen) to produce alcohols that may be used in the food, beverages, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and fuel industries.
