Dutch internationally operating company in logistic processes at airports is looking for solutions to identify characteristics of baggage in order to prevent disruptions

Global market leader for future-proof logistic process automation at airports and parcel markets, is looking for an automated digital system solution that can classify baggage based on its characteristics, to prevent process disruptions and improve process automation performance.
This request refers to an innovation challenge published on an open internet-platform. Cooperation will be arranged in a framework of a commercial agreement with technical assistance or a license agreement.

Established in 1949, the internationally operating company has developed itself over the years into a leading world player in fully automated logistic process automation at airports and parcel markets.
The services and know-how of the company are being applied in about 600 airports including 12 of the world’s top 20.

Through close cooperation with its customers and focus on optimization of their business processes and competitive positions, the company developed an extensive portfolio of innovative integrated solutions, reliable and efficient automation technology and intelligent software.
However, in line with the latest developments at airports, passengers use more self-service drop-off luggage and put it into the luggage system themselves. Despite respecting specific baggage rules of the different airlines and airports, such as outer dimensions and weight, unnecessary disturbances can occur downstream in the automated system and cause downtime (still stand), delays, or even jammed luggage with all its consequences.
Furthermore to allow for better robotic manipulation of baggage, a good understanding of the items-to-be-handled is required.

The company is, therefore, looking for an innovative and cost-effective solution that, based on observing/measuring features of the baggage, can predict if the baggage can be conveyed in the current system without causing disruptions and making increasing of system throughput possible. Additionally, the solution should be able to describe the baggage such that a robotic system can determine whether it can manipulate the item and, if so, how it could manipulate it.

The best proposition and solution for this challenge gets an assignment to create a prototype or pilot for the company. There will be support and a test facility in a real-life customer-facing simulation environment. Based on the results a follow-up order and/or scale-ups could be possible.

The company is looking for innovative start-ups, developers and/or SMEs and is open to all innovative and cost-efficient solutions based on creative thinking.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This technology request is part of an innovation challenge and is published on an open innovation platform from May 3rd till June 7th 2021.
