The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is looking for the supply of 38 multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets assemblies of five different types depending on the magnet to be insulated, for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) which is the worlds largest and most powerful particle accelerator. In order to reduce even further the radiative heat load, all cold surfaces are covered with MLI blankets. CERN is looking for suppliers, through public tender procedure.
A cryo-magnet assembly (Figure 1) is composed of the so-called cold mass operating at 1.9 K, formed by the superconducting magnet inside its helium vessel, surrounded by a so-called thermal shield made of aluminium and actively cooled to the temperature level 60-80 K to reduce the radiative heat load to the 1.9 K circuit. The cold-mass and its thermal shield are placed inside a vacuum vessel to avoid convection heat loads and are installed on low thermal conductivity supports to limit heat load by conduction. To reduce even further the radiative heat load, all cold surfaces are covered with MLI blankets.
An MLI blanket assembly is composed of:
Two superposed thermal shield MLI blankets (Figure 3);
One cold mass MLI blanket (Figure 4).
The estimated quantity of assemblies and approximate dimensions, for each type of magnet, are presented in Table 1.
- Type of partner sought: CERN will send a 3D CAD model of a conceptual design for information.
The Supply shall comply with the following parameters and conditions:
Each of the two thermal shield MLI blankets shall be composed of 15 superimposed reflective layers, each reflective layer being interleaved with separator layers;
The cold masses MLI blanket shall be composed of one layered structure of 10 superimposed reflective layers, each reflective layer being interleaved with separator layers;
Reflective layers shall be composed of polyester with a minimum thickness of 6 µm, aluminium coated to a minimum thickness of 40 nm on each side;
The outermost layer of each MLI blanket shall be reinforced. A thickness of 12 to 25 µm to increase its tearing resistance is required;
The reflective layers shall be perforated with open areas between 0.05 and 0.15 % of their total area in order to ease evacuation of the MLI enclosed areas;
The separator layers shall be composed of polyester net (tulle, non-woven) or equivalent;
For ease of installation, the MLI blankets shall be equipped with hook-and-loop fasteners stitched to the edges of the MLI blankets;
The MLI blankets shall be handled under clean conditions, even though a clean room environment is not required. No deposit, including fingerprints, on the aluminised surfaces will be accepted.
- Specific area of activity of the partner: The partner sought is an industrial company able to fulfil and demonstrate all the requirements.
The supply shall include the following deliverables and activities:
Design file (including fabrication drawings);
Procurement of raw material and components;
Packing of the Supply;
Shipping to CERN, if so requested.
Following the expression of interest, the company can be invited to tender to be issued in 3rd quarter 2019.
