Eureka/Eurostars: Spanish SME is seeking partners specialized on laser sensors and spectroscopy for biological agents’ detection




A Spanish SME specialized in cold atmospheric plasma decontamination technologies is looking for partners to participate on Eurostars program. The aim of this project is to develop a decontamination equipment with the technology of non-thermal plasma atmospheric pressure and a platform of laser sensors and spectroscopy integrated to visualize the level of biological decontamination. Partners searched must be specialized in laser sensors and spectroscopy for biological agents’ detection.


The Spanish company has developed an innovative prototype for decontamination of standard small and medium-sized objects based on cold atmospheric plasma. Among its main properties, our liquid-free solution neutralizes relevant hazardous chemical and biological agents by means of a portable, low-power device that is compatible with the requirements of both laboratory work as well as field operations. The technology has only been tested on a small scale.
The project aims to develop a prototype capable of decontaminating different sensitive materials, volumes and surfaces of up to 1m3 in a single phase, thereby protecting health, minimizing workload and resources since NTP AP (Non Thermal Plasma at Atmospheric Pressure) is a clean technology respectful of the environment. The system works with air at atmospheric pressure, so no carrier gases, water, or vacuum chambers are necessary when operational giving the system great versatility and added value.
Currently, plasma decontaminating equipment does exist, but works at low pressures and small volumes, due to electrode configuration, in general, it uses noble gases or peroxide to produce the plasma, thus its use in the field is very complex. In general terms, there is still a lack of decontamination technologies that are low in aggression, cost and logistics and that can be applied to a wide range of sectors, scenarios and hazards where biochemicals are present.
Through the creation of a single-phase protection and decontamination technique using NTP AP technology combined with a next-generation sensor platform to monitor the presence of biological agents, they can provide the market with a high performance, cost effective solution to mitigate this threat.
To apply for Eurostars the SME is seeking partners to take care of the control and monitoring unit the biological decontamination through sensors. Main activities:
• Develop a new platform of laser sensors and spectroscopy to be integrated to the decontamination chamber.
• Test the sensors and develop a control software with a graphical user interface.
• Validation of the technology.
The partner for a research cooperation agreement should come from Eurostars member countries. The Spanish SME is willing to coordinate the project.

Able to participate in the dissemination of the project, the marketing plan, market study and be experienced in international product marketing.

The end uses at civil level of the decontamination technology trough non thermal plasma at atmospheric pressure are infinite:
• Decontamination of medical supplies in hospitals, within living tissues and on sensitive material.
• Decontamination of food products to eliminate possible chemical or biological agents (bacteria) that may exist on the surface, as well as extending their shelf life.
• Decontamination of sensitive material that can be structurally or functionally damaged when being decontaminated, sterilized or disinfected using heat, chemicals or water-based products).
• Decontamination in the event of accidents and / or chemical and / or biological attacks.
