Summary

Estonian research institute has developed a compact cataract measuring device that enables to quantitatively measure the severity of cataract. Estonian research institute has developed a compact cataract measuring device that enables to quantitatively measure the severity of cataract. The principle of operation of this device is based on the illumination of the patient's eye with a weak light and measuring the light back-scattered from the eye lens. The prototype has been tested in a local clinic.

The further developent of the device should make it more precise and comfortable for the patient.

About the organization:
This research institute is a branch of the major university in Estonia. They are internationally recognized research establishment and are currently hosting 11 high level research groups.

They are looking for partners to develop the product for entering to the market. Co-operation for financing the development of the prototype and production is sought.

Innovative Aspects


Device is portable. It enables optical cataract assessment.

It works by measuring with a circular photodetector the fraction of light scattered backwards by the human eye lens when illuminated by a laser diode. As this signal arises directly from the fundamental pathologyincreased scattering in the lens it directly assesses cataract extent and progression. Initial clinical results in undilated human eyes show device reading correlations in agreement with clinical examination.
