Summary

A German company looks for a new technology to deactivate/neutralise pyrotechnical actuator systems for airbags and seat-belt tensioners in end-of-life vehicles in order to replace time-consuming or destructive methods. The device should be applicable to different types of cars and use the existing diagnostic connectors to activate airbags. The technology should be already on the market or in the phase of market introduction. Partners are sought for licensing agreement and technical cooperation.

Full description

Modern vehicles are more and more equipped with extensive occupant protection systems, like airbags or seat-belt tensioners. All these systems are based on pyrotechnical actuators. Aim of the recycling process is to recover as many as valuable componenets as possible. Before starting with the initial car demolition, all the actuators must be rendered harmless without destructing the reusable or exploitable components of the cars.
Currently, very often recycling companies are using simple and time-consuming methods - like one-on-one activation - to neutralize the respective protection systems. Only few devices are using on-board airbag activation applying a set of car-specific adapter cables instead.

A German company is looking for a provider of advanced on-board end-of-life activation devices for such pyrotechnical systems in vehicles. The device should be applicable for many types of cars from different manufacturers - without the necessity of car-specific adapters - and it should use the existing diagnostic connectors to activate the airbags (OBD). The technology should be already on the market or at least in the phase of market introduction.

Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
- As much as possible the technical solution should be independent from type and manufacturer of the cars, without the necessity of any car-specific adapters
- Utilisation of existing (CAN) diagnosis interfaces
- Legal documentation of all airbag (or belt tensioner) activations
- Arbitrary definition of the ignition sequences

Partner expertise sought:

- Type of partner sought: Industry.

- Specific area of activity of the partner:
Electronic engineering for automotive applications, automotive supplier dealing with board electronics, recycling of electronic parts like airbags, belt tensioners etc.

- Task to be performed by the partner sought:
Testing of the device, adaption to specific needs.
