Summary
A German SME developed a retrofit technology to disinfect water for large scale consumers that is based on natural processes using ultraviolet radiation. The technology can smoothly be integrated into existing water supply facilities and is suited for hot water facilities as well as ultrapure water facilities. Partners for licence agreements with technical support and adaption to specific needs are sought.
Full description
Today the most used method of disinfection is chlorination. One problem of this method is the release of halo forms for example chloroform. These substances are suspected to cause cancer. A German SME with the core business in developing, producing and selling high-performance environmental technology and experiences in developing countries turned to a method naturally occurring since millions of years a principle that needs no additives to disinfect water ultra violet radiation. This principle leaves no toxic substances in the water. Harmful germs are inactivated by ultraviolet radiation inside the installation. No change in taste and smell occurs after disinfection of the water. Turbidity and high iron content can decrease the effectiveness of UV radiation. Therefore a suitable pre-cleaner should be used. When the UV equipment is installed behind the filter, water will be repeatedly exposed to the UVC source. This physical procedure inactivates microorganisms existing in the water without chemicals, not altering water characteristics. There is no chance for the arising of any reaction products being detrimental to health. After applying the high quality UV- installation correctly the water must not be boiled.
The technology can smoothly be integrated into existing water supply and is suited for hot water facilities as well as for ultrapure water facilities. The used UV radiators are characterised by a long operating life by using stainless steel, a high level effectiveness in disinfection and a low energy consumption that can be provided in remote areas by a self contained power supply or by photovoltaic. The power supply can be carried out with 230 V/50 Hz or optionally 12 V DC, 24 V DC or 110 V AC. The flow rate ranges from 1m³/h to 14m³/h.
Innovative Aspects
*Additional chemicals are not required for disinfection
*Smell and taste of the water are not influenced by radiation
*Due to biological methods there is no ecological damage
*Disinfection of water contaminated by pathogenic germs who are resistant
against chlorination
*Manageable maintenance
*Small operation expenses
*Easy handling
*No danger of over- or underdose
*Quick and effective sterilisation
*Less required space
So the following benefits arise:
*Replacement of disinfection by use of chlorine at drinking water and pools
*Reduction of algae and parasites in aquariums und pools and elimination of the
danger of infection through the use of humidifiers by water of air conditioning
*Disinfection and TOC-reduction at disinfection of permeate
*Pure water with extreme high doses (Pharmacy)
*UV-Disinfection for water circulation at greenhouses
