01/08/2010 - 06/08/2010 Edinburgh, UK Fungal biology is gaining in importance in everyday life, playing an important role in biotechnology, medicine and the food industry. Fungi are crucial to the functioning of Earth ecosystems because of the role they play in decomposition and nutrient cycling.
New areas of research will be reviewed within five main conference themes:
- cell biology, biochemistry and physiology,
- environment, ecology and interaction,
- evolution, biodiversity and systematics,
- fungal pathogenesis and disease control,
- genomics, genetics and molecular biology.
The event programme includes 300 oral presentations within 45 thematic symposia and supplemented by over 1000 posters, optional special interest group meetings, field trips and an exhibition. A complementary public exhibition, entitled 'From another kingdom', will be hosted at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh during the conference. 01/08/2010 Washington DC, USA A joint Japanese-EU workshop on 'Fundamental properties of novel superconducting materials' will take place on 1 August 2010 in Washington DC, USA.
The workshop, organised by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), will promote Japanese-EU scientific exchange in the field of superconductivity and explore the possibilities of coordinated research between Japanese and European researchers.
It will also highlight work being done by the European Commission and JST on a coordinated call for proposals to support research on the fundamental properties of novel superconducting materials.
Participants will have the opportunity to liaise and network, with a view towards putting together possible coordinated research proposals.
15/08/2010 - 18/08/2010 Chicago, US The event will look at key issues and topics related to energy efficiency in computing and promoting environmentally-friendly computer technologies and systems. It will aim to provide a forum to a wide audience for discussing, sharing and investigating the latest in green computing, including energy-efficient use of computers, the design of algorithms and systems for environmentally-friendly computer technologies and a wide range of related topics.
The conference will also be a forum for presentations on hardware and software systems, algorithms, and applications, as well as research areas related to power, energy and temperature which are of importance to researchers, engineers and practitioners.
Alongside the conference, a series of forums and workshops will examine how the carbon footprint of computing can be reduced and how computers can contribute to the environment and overall well-being of the planet.Topics will include:
- 'Workshop on the science of power management',
- 'Workshop on low power system on chip',
- 'The work in progress in green computing'. 17/08/2010 Lisbon, Portugal Logistics is concerned with the organisation and control of processes in space and time in order to transport or manufacture goods and coordinate resulting flows of material, information and money.
The complexity and dynamics of logistic networks have reached a level where the processes are increasingly difficult to fully observe and control. At the same time, recent trends in logistics point towards solutions with distributed and self-organising processes.
Such logistic networks are characterised by a wide variety of heterogeneous properties, constraints, and requirements: temporal (very quickly, just in time), economic (low cost, given budget), physical (smooth, secure travel), informational (public, secure data) and environmental (low energy, ecology-preserving). To ensure that all parts of a network function in harmony, methods from artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive science may be required.
The event will address the interplay of AI and logistics, and serve as a platform for looking at issues in the field. 18/08/2010 Strathcona Lecture Theatre

AB21 9SB The theme of the half day event is to explore the collaboration opportunities that exist between the Life Science sector and the Food Health sector.
Showcasing business that currently operate across the sectors and experience of collaborations at work are a number of the speaker topics being presented. We all recognise the blurring of sector boundaries and the importance of collaboration in meeting a market demand through utilising expertise found in various sectors including food and health sector, that could be applied in life science and vice versa.
The event is taking place at University of Aberdeen, Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health and we welcome life science practitioners and food science practitioners to join us for a ‘healthy’ (excuse pun) discussion on the opportunities and learning from our invited audience and guest speakers.

19/08/2010 Institute for Advanced Studies, Strathclyde University, Glasgow G1 Nothing is more intimate and private than a person’s thoughts. New technologies from neuroscience are getting closer and closer to “seeing”whatwe think. These have many possible applications, not all of them for medical use. They could be used as lie detector tests in courts.
To decide if a person is dangerous, even if they haven’t committed any crime. To see what we really like and dislike, so that advertising companies can convince us to buy their products. Medical insurance companies could use them to determine if you are a risk or need to pay higher premiums. Mortgage lenders to see if you are truthful in your application.
But are all these applications really a good idea? What should we allow, require or prohibit?
Join the debate in Glasgow and give us your view.
This conference will focus on the policy areas and issues that need to be addressed in order to control indiscriminate use of this powerful technology and help achieve its benefits.

Component-based and service-oriented architectures are critical to the design, development and evolution of all software systems.
Following the success of previous editions, ECSA 2010 will bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to share novel ideas on the foundations, languages, models, techniques, tools, and applications of software architecture technology.
The conference programme includes keynotes, research presentations, papers, posters, and demos of new tools and systems. 30/08/2010 - 03/09/2010 Bilbao, Spain Electronic commerce has evolved into a well-established sector, both from a technological and business point of view. Nevertheless, new challenges and issues have emerged.
This conference aims to provide a clear picture of the current state of the industry by focusing on a number of relevant topics, such as related to theoretical foundations of e-commerce, business processes and new emerging technologies. Also on the agenda are such areas as the semantic web, web services, service-oriented architectures and mobile and ubiquitous computing.
The conference will be organised around four main thematic tracks: agent-based electronic commerce, service oriented e-commerce and business processes, e-payment, security and trust and recommender systems. Each of these tracks will have a central point with related topics of interest. Even though the main focus of the conference is the relationship between e-commerce and emerging technologies, theoretical issues as well as cross-track contributions will also be encouraged.
The conference is co-located with the 21st International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications. 30/08/2010 Paris, France Concurrency is a situation where computations are executed simultaneously, and potentially interact with each other. In recent years, concurrency theory has been an active field of research in theoretical computer science.
Emerging trends in concurrency theory require the definition of models and languages adequate for the design and management of new classes of applications, mainly programming either wide area networks (WANs) or smaller networks of mobile and portable devices. Due to the openness of these systems, new critical aspects come into play, such as the need to deal with malicious components or with a hostile environment.
Current research on network security issues usually focuses on opening cryptographic point-to-point tunnels. However, these may not always succeed in supporting the end-to-end secure interaction between entities whose availability or location is not known beforehand.
The aim of the workshop is to cover the gap between the security and the concurrency communities. It will also promote the exchange of ideas, focusing on common interests and stimulating discussions on central research questions.
The workshop will take place at the same time as the 21st International Conference on Concurrency Theory. 31/08/2010 Premier Inn, 187 George Street, Glasgow G1 1YU. 9.00am (breakfast/networking) - 12.30pm.
