Eddie has also published articles on the subject of collaboration and the role of collaboration in product innovation. 02/09/2010 - 03/09/2010 Noordwijk, the Netherlands Wide band gap semiconductors such as gallium nitride have emerged as one of the most promising materials for future electronic components. They offer tremendous advantages in terms of power capability (DC and microwave), radiation insensitivity, high temperature and high frequency operation, optical properties and even low noise capability. These properties make wide band gap components strategically important for the development of next generation space systems. An important objective of the event is to facilitate information exchange between aerospace, defence, space agency and EU-funded research programmes in order to prevent duplication and ensure the rapid transfer of technology to the manufacturing sector. An open discussion session is planned in which attendee viewpoints will be gathered in order to identify key problem areas and to help coordinate and plan future research and development work programmes. 02/09/2010 Go Group, George House, 36 North Hanover Street, Glasgow, G1 2AD This FREE one day seminar is brought to you by EDTC Technology Gateway. The seminar will be facilitated by Dr Mike Barker, Materials & Technology Advisor at EDTC. In addition, two industry specialists will also be delivering part of this seminar. David Haswell of Thredgards Ltd will cover the tooling and part costing and James McLusky of Shore Design will cover the process of taking a product design from concept through to prototype. Plastics already play an extensive part in the design and manufacture of everyday products and their importance is increasing. The seminar will cover:
06/09/2010 - 10/09/2010 Lisbon, Portugal The theme of this year's meeting will be 'From varying couplings to fundamental physics'. The conference will focus on discussing physical laws and fundamental dimensionless couplings. The event will bring together the most active researchers in the field to discuss the latest developments and to explore ways to leverage the unique capabilities of various groups. It will also aim to enable researchers to collaborate with facilities such as the EU's Very Large Telescope and the European Extremely Large Telescope, as well as the Planck and Herschel spacecrafts and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) partnership. JENAM is organised each year by the European Astronomical Society and a national astronomical society. This year, it will be held at the same time as the Portuguese Meeting of Astronomy and Astrophysics. 06/09/2010 St Andrews, UK Constraint programming (CP) is a powerful technology to model and solve combinatorial problems. It is a programming paradigm which does not specify a step or sequence of steps to execute. Instead CP details the properties of a solution which needs to be found. The last decade has seen a significant amount of research devoted to modelling and solving problems with constraints. CP is now a mature field and has been successfully used for addressing a wide range of real-life complex applications. However, the technology is currently accessible to only a small number of experts. For CP to be more widely used by non-experts, more research is needed in order to make the technology easier to use. Workshop topics will include: 06/09/2010 - 10/09/2010 University of Abertay Dundee The 24th BCS Conference on Human Computer Interaction - HCI2010 - has as its theme Play is a serious business. At its heart, the conference wishes to consider the business of Play in relation to concepts, people and technology. But, as ever we are also interested in all things new and innovative in the world of HCI. HCI2010 will run 6th - 10th September and be hosted by University of Abertay Dundee. 06/09/2010 - 08/09/2010 Clermont Ferrand, France The event will address topics as diverse as adaptation strategies for climate change, health and safety at work, and management of energy issues and of natural and agricultural resources. These changes are likely to have consequences, both immediate and long-term, for society, the economy and daily life. The conference will also focus on how advances in the design and development of environmental technologies will impact rural development. Farming, aquaculture, forestry and multifunctional uses of the land will all be taken into account. 06/09/2010 - 10/09/2010 Linköping, Sweden Through an ever-burgeoning technical apparatus of surveying, data mining and targeted internet search, the attention of individual minds is estimated, marketed and traded. The 'attention economy' is enabled by technologies like web-crawlers, search algorithms and agents, and all kinds of metadata production. The dominance of this mode of conceiving and calculating attention gives rise to many national, regional and global phenomena. The traditional values of the public sphere are being unmistakably reshaped though these processes. The conference is also interested in how practices such as videogaming, filesharing, media experimentation and mobile phone activism create cultural opportunities. While there is a concerted effort to commercialise and exploit these spaces according to the demands of the global media industries, the reorientation of social communication practices by web 2.0 technologies remains full of potential. The event will seek to encourage dialogue between researchers from the fields of cultural and new media studies, education, communications, economics, internet studies, human computer interface studies, art and design. It also seeks the input and insights of creative practitioners exploring critical and alternative uses of new media forms and technologies. 06/09/2010 - 08/09/2010 Leeds (UK) The Coal Research Forum was formed in 1989 to encourage, promote and co-ordinate basic research on coal, coal characterisation, coal products and coal utilisation in the UK. Particular emphasis is given to the promotion and co-ordination of contact between academe and industry and the assessment and co-ordination of resources and needs concerned with coal utilisation and conversion. The 7th meeting held in 2008 at the University of Cardiff, was successful in attracting almost 100 abstracts, the majority being given as oral presentations, with around 25 poster presentations. 06/09/2010 - 10/09/2010 St Andrews, United Kingdom The primary focus of the event will be on the use of graphical approaches in enabling structural properties of constraint models used in a wide variety of tasks. These can include constraint propagation, solution counting, reasoning with soft constraints and preferences, inference under uncertainty, and configuration. Graphical structures have helped solve a number of computationally challenging problems. This is especially true for problems related to decision support such as probabilistic reasoning or configuration have been addressed through compiling the models into computationally efficient graphical representations. The same graphical structures are increasingly used in a classical constraint programming context: to improve the efficiency of search for a feasible solution or finding an optimal solution. The workshop will take place the same time as the International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming. 06/09/2010 - 08/09/2010 York, UK In the mid-1990s, researchers began applying evolutionary algorithms to new kinds of programmable electronic devices that allowed the functionality and physical connections of circuits to be modified both easily and inexpensively. The combination of these programmable devices and of evolutionary algorithms spawned a new research field: evolvable hardware. Since that time, the field has expanded beyond the use of evolutionary algorithms on simple electronic devices to encompass many different combinations of biologically-inspired algorithms and physical (real or simulated) devices. The event will be looking to bring together researchers who combine biologically inspired concepts with hardware and presenting the latest developments in the field. There will be a series of speeches on each of the three days, centred on morning and afternoon sessions. 07/09/2010 Valencia, Spain This workshop will gather software engineering researchers from fields related to the development of self-adaptive systems in order to identify research challenges, and discuss models, techniques, tools and methodologies for the development of complex systems able to dynamically adapt their behaviour. Traditionally, handling changing requirements, faults, or upgrades on different kinds of software-based systems have been tasks performed as a maintenance activity conducted by human operators at the time of design or development. However, factors such as uncertainty in the operational environment, resource variability, or the critical nature of some systems have lead to the development of systems able to replan and reconfigure their structure and behaviour at run time in order to improve their operation without any human intervention. These kinds of systems, which typically operate using an explicit representation of their structure and goals, have been studied within different research areas of software engineering and described with different names. Another promising approach to systems able to dynamically adapt themselves is the self-organising system. This type of system is typically composed of a large number of constituent components which operate according to a set of local rules, rather than with an explicit representation of its structure and goals. In this case, the emergent behaviour derived from component interaction stabilises the system in the event of faults or changes in the environment which need to be handled. 08/09/2010 Jewel & Esk College; Edinburgh Campus; eh15 (www.jec.ac.uk/find-us) In partnership with Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, Stevenson College Edinburgh and Edinburgh Telford College, Jewel & Esk College are holding another of their Business Breakfast events. 10/09/2010 Glasgow, UK The implementation of modern digital libraries is more demanding than in the past. Information consumers are facing with the need to access ever growing, heterogeneous, related information spaces. At the same time, information providers are interested in sharing rich and organised views about sometimes overabundant information. Because of their fundamental role in information production and dissemination, digital libraries are also expected to provide information society with functionality and services that must be continuously available and guarantee the expected quality of service. This leads to the development of 'very large digital libraries' (VLDL), which are defined in terms of the number of information objects and collections to be made available, users to be served and potentially distributed functionality/content resources needed to construct them. Research on very large digital libraries has led to a number of challenges which have scalability, interoperability and sustainability as focal points. Event topics are scheduled to include: 10/09/2010 Berlin, Germany A conference entitled 'Joint strategy and networking event 2010, thinking ahead to the European Green Cars Initiative' will be held in Berlin, Germany on 10 September 2010. Increased collaboration between individuals and organisations often leads to the sharing of information and services outside of an owner's area of control. This provides strong motivation for investigation into the infrastructure, and in particular the security necessary to protect the information and resources shared within these environments. This research needs to address, among other things, collaboratively developed security policy, continued ownership and control of shared information, intellectual property, privacy requirements and content specific information security requirements. Secure collaborative working is an essential part of eScience. Such collaboration could take place within many scientific domains, such as in bio-sciences and particle physics, where data must be shared securely and in accordance with specific usage policies. The aim of the workshop is therefore to bring together a diverse community of individuals to identify best practice and share experiences. The outcome could be the basis for defining a `roadmap' in this area. 14/09/2010 Emmanuel Centre, 9-23 Marsham Street, London The FP7UK National Contact Point for Security, in conjunction with the Home Office, is holding an Information Session on FP7's Security theme and the recently announced Call for Proposals. Social network sites add even more information from friends and peers tailored to certain social groups sharing common interests. The wide adoption of mobile phones and smart phones provides a widely deployed gateway to this cloud of information while being on the move. At the same time, the attention of mobile users is often split among many simultaneous tasks. This means that valuable location-based services have to be tailored to current user interests and needs. At base, location data and context derived from various sensors can act as an indicator for a user's current activities. By complementing the sensor data with domain knowledge of a specific assistance scenario (like shopping, or health-care), it is possible to go well beyond functionality. In assistance scenarios - in contrast to a general setting - user activities can be assumed to be related to certain well-defined tasks. By formalising those tasks and the related user goals, additional meaning can be attributed to context information. On this basis the integration of user preferences can be achieved, keeping the user in the loop of control during concurring and uncertain system states. 22/09/2010 - 24/09/2010 Ostend This 3 day security conference is hosted by Belgian Government.
