The 19th International Spin Physics Symposium

The symposium, which will be organised into plenary sessions and parallel sessions, will cover topics related to spin phenomena, in particle and nuclear physics. These topics will include:
- fundamental symmetries and spin,
- spin structure of hadrons,
- spin physics beyond the standard model,
- spin in hadronic reactions,
- spin physics with photons and leptons,
- spin physics in nuclear reactions and nuclei,
- spin physics with rare isotope beams,
- acceleration, storage and polarimetry of polarised beams,
- polarised ion and lepton sources and targets,
- future facilities and experiments,
- medical and technological applications of spin physics.

In particle physics and quantum mechanics, spin is a fundamental characteristic property of elementary particles, composite particles (hadrons), and atomic nuclei. All elementary particles of a given kind have the same spin quantum number, which is an important part of a particle's quantum state.

Participation by students, young physicists, and physicists from developing countries is strongly encouraged at this symposium.

'Regional strategies on active ageing' workshop

Regions in Europe often lack strategies dealing with the issues of demographic development and ageing.

Mostly they still see both as a threat rather than an opportunity. The latter, though, offers opportunities for new services and products. This can boost companies and regional service providers, helping them to gain competitive advantages over competitors in other regions and eventually creating new jobs and employment.

One of the partners in the workshop is the Silver Economy Network of European Regions (Senaer). Some of the member regions have strategies developed and in place from which could serve as inspiration for others. This includes programmes ranging from dedicated support and funding programmes, such as the one in the Gelderland region (Netherlands), to dedicated policy programmes in regions like Limburg (Netherlands), Limousin (France) and Extremadura (Spain) and the dedicated 'Senior economy' initiative in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany).

Workshop objectives are to:
- inform about the objectives of the European Year for Active Ageing & Intergenerational Solidarity 2012,
- develop a European exchange of information on activities and initiatives in different European regions,
- identify areas for cooperation which may lead to the establishment of partner consortia,
- develop and submit project proposals to European Commission funding programmes.

Workshop on security and privacy in collaborative working

The emergence of high-speed networks, cloud computing, service-oriented architectures, web 2.0 and an ever increasing ambient connection to mobile internet has enabled an underpinning infrastructure for the development of dynamically-formed, collaborative working groups.

Increased collaboration between individuals and organisations often leads to the sharing of information and services outside of an owner's area of control. This provides strong motivation for investigation into the infrastructure, and in particular the security necessary to protect the information and resources shared within these environments. This research needs to address, among other things, collaboratively developed security policy, continued ownership and control of shared information, intellectual property, privacy requirements and content specific information security requirements.

Secure collaborative working is an essential part of eScience. Such collaboration could take place within many scientific domains, such as in bio-sciences and particle physics, where data must be shared securely and in accordance with specific usage policies.

The aim of the workshop is therefore to bring together a diverse community of individuals to identify best practice and share experiences. The outcome could be the basis for defining a `roadmap' in this area.

Personal semantic data on the desktop and on the web

Personal information management (PIM) is an area of interest for both researchers and industry. While time and energy resources remain constant, the amount of information that needs attention grows exponentially with advances in communications and information sharing tools.

The tools that people use to manage personal information have evolved over time. The desktop used to be at the centre of a user's PIM universe, containing contacts, emails, events, appointments and to-do lists. However, as the amount of stored information and the number of applications has grown, desktop data has become harder and harder to manage.

At the same time, more online services and applications are becoming available to users and gaining in popularity. As a result, the boundaries between the desktop and the web become less discernible. The desktop is no longer the single access point to personal information, but one of many personal information sources. Consequently, personal information is becoming more fragmented across multiple devices, requiring extra effort to synchronise, duplicate, search and browse. Semantic technologies can improve significantly the user's experience and relieve some of the stress associated with managing disparate information.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners in the areas of personal information management, user modelling, semantic web and linked data to share their visions, research achievements, and solutions, as well as to establish new collaborations in research and development. At the same time, the event will provide a platform for discussing research topics and challenges related to personal semantic data.

Fourth International Workshop on Graph-Based Tools

The workshop will cover the latest in graph-based tool development, bringing together developers of graph-based tools in different application fields and to encourage cooperation in new tool development.

Among the topics which are scheduled to be covered are the following:
- tools for model-driven development,
- meta CASE tools or generators,
- tools for visual languages,
- model transformation and model management tools,
- visualisation, animation and simulation tools,
- analysis of models, transformations and programs (incl. verification & validation, static analysis, testing),
- data analysis and pattern recognition techniques,
- tool integration techniques,
- software engineering tools,
- software evolution,
- efficient algorithms (pattern matching, handling of large graph models).

The event is one in a series, and this year's edition will have a special emphasis on applications of graph-based tools to model-driven engineering. Different tools, built around industry-driven frameworks (like Eclipse), are based on the notion of graph to perform different activities, most notably different model transformations, like animations, simulations, refactorings and model-to-model transformations.

This is a national event hosted by Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise

The purpose of this free workshop is to bring all of the developers involved in the Scottish Territorial Waters and Scottish coast Round three sites and Scottish Port owners together at a single event.

Fluid machinery - meeting the environmental challenge

Fluid machines are, collectively, the largest consumers of energy in most industrial plants. For the manufacturing sector, they can be considered as having a high impact vis-a-vis the environment.

There is a significant amount of environmental legislation and fiscal controls (e.g. directives concerning energy using products, noise regulation laws, carbon dioxide emissions tariffs) which impact the design and operation of fluid machinery. More stringent requirements are inevitable as stricter global, European and national targets are imposed.

Fortunately, reducing environmental impact need not always mean increased cost. There is significant scope for financial savings, such as through reduced energy usages, improved design for remanufacturing and reuse of components.

This event aims to raise awareness of legislative requirements and showcase best practices being adopted by manufacturers and users, highlighting where opportunities exist to reduce the wider impact of fluid machinery and work in harmony with environmental requirements.

Future internet and society: a complex systems perspective

This conference will bring together information and communication technology (ICT) experts, social scientists and professionals in the area of complex systems. They will assess the latest developments, identify new trends and look to the future in the domains of society and the future internet.

The complexity of the current internet structure and its future can only be understood by using a multi-disciplinary approach. Such an approach should include the science of complex systems, and in particular complex network theory. It should also rely on the social sciences and humanities to explain the underpinnings of the internet at a societal and economic level.

Topics that will be covered in the conference include:
- internet topology and modelling,
- complex techno-social networks,
- modelling of collective social behaviour,
- social and human dynamics,
- spreading and epidemics in techno-social systems,
- virtual social systems,
- co-evolution of internet and society,
- internet as a socio-economical system,
- mobile social networks,
- internet enabled applications and business,
- future internet as a techno-social system.

This conference is organised by the European Science Foundation (ESF) in partnership with European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST).

Workshop on context aware intelligent assistance

The internet gives access to large amounts of time- and location-related information, such as local events, transportation timetables and news. Social network sites add even more information from friends and peers tailored to certain social groups sharing common interests. The wide adoption of mobile phones and smart phones provides a widely deployed gateway to this cloud of information while being on the move.

At the same time, the attention of mobile users is often split among many simultaneous tasks. This means that valuable location-based services have to be tailored to current user interests and needs.

At base, location data and context derived from various sensors can act as an indicator for a user's current activities. By complementing the sensor data with domain knowledge of a specific assistance scenario (like shopping, or health-care), it is possible to go well beyond functionality. In assistance scenarios - in contrast to a general setting - user activities can be assumed to be related to certain well-defined tasks.

By formalising those tasks and the related user goals, additional meaning can be attributed to context information. On this basis the integration of user preferences can be achieved, keeping the user in the loop of control during concurring and uncertain system states.

Highly oscillatory problems: from theory to applications

Highly oscillatory phenomena occur in a wide range of phenomena in science and engineering. The topic has a reputation of being difficult to analyse and compute.

At the same time, phenomena have attracted a great deal of attention, mainly in the fields of harmonic analysis, asymptotic analysis, homogenisation, differential geometry, theory of Hamiltonian systems and theory of integrable systems. Once they have been understood from a mathematical standpoint, effective computational algorithms often follow.

Third Workshop on Very Large Digital Libraries

The implementation of modern digital libraries is more demanding than in the past. Information consumers are facing with the need to access ever growing, heterogeneous, related information spaces. At the same time, information providers are interested in sharing rich and organised views about sometimes overabundant information.

Because of their fundamental role in information production and dissemination, digital libraries are also expected to provide information society with functionality and services that must be continuously available and guarantee the expected quality of service. This leads to the development of 'very large digital libraries' (VLDL), which are defined in terms of the number of information objects and collections to be made available, users to be served and potentially distributed functionality/content resources needed to construct them.

Research on very large digital libraries has led to a number of challenges which have scalability, interoperability and sustainability as focal points. Event topics are scheduled to include:
- architectural models for VLDL systems,
- data models for VLDL content,
- design methodologies for VLDLs,
- constructing VLDLs as integration and federation of existing digital libraries,
- management in VLDLs,
- security issues in VLDLs,
- sustainability issues in VLDLs,
- scalability issues in VLDLs,
- distribution issues for VLDLs,
- interoperability issues for VLDLs: content and functionality,
- managing content in VLDLs: storage, indexing, integration, aggregation, preservation, manipulation, and others.

Third International Workshop on Academic Software Development Tools

The aim of the annual event is to explore the role that tools and tool-building play in applied academic software engineering research. Even though tool-building is a popular technique to validate research, it is neither simple nor cheap. Given the importance of tool building and the significant cost associated with it, the workshop will allow interested researchers to share their tool-building experiences and explore how tools can be built more effectively and efficiently.

Discussions at the event will not focus on any specific kind of tool, but rather the issues common to all tool builders, and builders of academic research prototypes in particular. Questions will include:
- 'Should tool building remain a craft?',
- 'Should academic tools be of commercial quality?',
- 'How to integrate and combine independently developed tools?',
- 'What are the positive lessons learned in building tools?',
- 'What are the pitfalls in tool building?',
- 'What are good practices?',
- 'What are effective techniques to improve the quality of academic tools?',
- 'What is needed to build an active community of developers and users?',
- 'Are there any useful tool building patterns for software engineering tools?',
- 'How to compare or benchmark such tools?',
- 'What particular languages and language paradigms are suited to build software engineering tools?'

Workshop on simulation and ground support facilities for space programmes

A workshop on simulation and ground support facilities for space programmes will be held on 28-30 September 2010 in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.

The main objective of the workshop is to bring together representatives of space agencies and industry to review the latest in modelling, simulations and ground systems simulators as well electrical ground support equipment (EGSE). The event will also aim to discuss new ideas and solutions for the future.

Simulation is a key activity that supports the specification, design, verification and operations of space systems. In the recent years, system modelling and simulation has grown. At the same time, there is recognition that a more coordinated and consistent approach to the development of simulation products across project phases can bring substantial benefits. This would promote the most effective use of simulation within the system engineering process to minimise the overall space programme schedule, risk and cost.

EGSE is also influenced by software and simulation. Within the testing domain, simulation brings flexibility to the assembly, integration and test (AIT) planning and scheduling.

During the workshop, the European Space Agency expects to receive feedback from attendees on new research and development activities and on the expected role of ESA within the European space modelling, simulation and EGSE community.
