[Eurostars2 2018] A Korean company is looking for partners for developing non-blind spot type smart fire security system based on a sound-field security sensor for early stage fire detection




A Korean SME specializing in ICT/IoT technology is preparing for Eurostars2 in February 2018 with an aim to develop an automatic and innovative fire detection device based on sound field sensor system. A sound field is a technical name given to the dispersion of sound energy within given boundaries.
The company is looking for a R&D performing SME to sell wireless devices at smart home market through own R&D capability, preferably with an experience in the design of ICT/IoT service design.


Fire is a huge problem in Korea and the EU; In 2015, 44.435 cases occurred in Korea, resulting in property loss of € 346 Billion and 1,837 casualties . Conventional fire detection technologies react slowly and is not capable of fire detection in hidden places with frequent false alarms. These characteristics often incur extra costs for the end user.

The Korean company aims to develop a fire detection system with a faster reaction and improved detection accuracy based on a sound field to substantially reduce the losses caused by fire.

Established in 2010, the Korean company has expertise in IoT and ICT technology and products. It has manufactured around 1 million smart home IoT controllers for a large Korean telecommunication enterprise and commercialized the Z-wave gateway technology in Korea for the first time. The Z-wave gateway technology allows the users to control their home remotely via a smart phone, computer, or other devices.

The fire detection device the company is developing detects heat through sound speed differences, using a speaker and a microphone. The system will react 80% faster compared to competing detectors, with 20% cheaper cost of production. The device can be more easily installed than existing products and is able to detect a fire in blind spots.

As an Internet of Things (IoT) product, the device is connected to the internet to deliver real time imaging of the scene through a mobile app for a quick reaction.

The estimated duration of the project is 36 months and will be managed by multilateral international R&D consortium between South Korea and EU partners. The company will serve the role of an R&D Performing SME. A national Korean R&D institution in the consortium will provide the core technology and patent. Another national institution will be in charge of the evaluation, certification and operate the test bed for the new product. For Eurostar 2018 a Danish partner joined the consortium in partnership with the latter institution.

Currently the consortium needs a European R&D performing SME to serve as the counterpart to the Korean company.

The goal of the project is to develop and test a unique sound-field detection method for early fire detection for companies interested in protecting the values present in their office and industrial spaces.
The main result would be a novel fire detection system based on a sound-field detection technology and with some distinctive advantages compared to existing products, such as speed of reaction, accuracy even in blind spots, online connectivity, IoT integration with other computing and video coverage of the scene for prompt reaction in case of a fire. Other types of results are as below:

• Fire detection algorithm that uses a sound transfer function variation between a sound source and a microphone to measure changes in the sound pressure spectra and detect the early stage of a fire within 30 seconds.

• A fire detection device integrating a speaker, microphone, camera and battery tested against a diversity of parameters to ensure reliability in all targeted environments and in compliance with relevant industrial standards
• Installation specifications, customized method and networking will be followed

• Business model and forecasts, marketing strategy for target market as well as certification procedures will be done

The solid frame of proposal with details of work procedures and tasks exists, but current consortium members will discuss openly about further details and regional considerations when a new partner is introduced to the consortium.

The deadline of the EoI for the March call will be accepted until February 20, 2018 and EoI for the September call will be accepted only until August 20, 2018.

Besides the innovative detection algorithm and sensor structure, the partner will contribute to the related successful factors for project in the Consortium as a member.

- Developing prototype and validation
The R&D activities will be coordinated by the Korean company in a laboratory environment.

- Market test
The performance of the developed system under realistic conditions and demonstration in realistic examples in different end-users’ premises will be conducted. The partner will share the priority and process with the Korean company.

- Exploitation strategy
The partner will identify the most suitable customer segment which will benefit from the results of project. Also, the partner will design a clear business model for generating revenue from the product including a sales channel to reach as many customers as possible both in Europe and Korea.
The activities will be backed up by suitable price and service package.

- Project Management
The partner will lead the overall project control and adjustment in the European region and will coordinate each step with the Korean company.

Advantages & innovations:

The main advantage of the device in design is earlier detection of a fire faster than those of the existing detection methods such as thermal, flame and infrared sensors.

In addition, the omnipresent nature of the sound field eliminates undetectable points in a fire protection target. The production cost of the device is lower than the existing ones because the sound field-based sensor for fire detection will be implemented by cheaper audio components similar to audible speakers and microphones in smart phones and AI speakers.

The result product of R&D will be composed of sound detection sensors, network gateway, cloud and app/web. The upcoming technologies like AI and block chains would be adopted to meet special market requests for pre-commercial products.

Though this is the first time for the company to participate in Eurostars2, the current coordinator of the company possesses a good understanding of the culture and work environment of the companies from EU.
